The real test of a high school education is how it plays out afterward. CAN graduates are successful, hardworking, and are making contributions in diverse fields. Here are just a few of the many paths taken by Concept Alumni.

Alumni Spotlight
(Week of Nov 2, 2015)

Meliha Eldek

Meliha Eldek is an Alumna of Horizon Science Academy Toledo High School, Class of 2015. Currently, Meliha is a freshman at the University of Toledo studying Criminal Justice and Psychology.

Briefly, describe your career path.
I am currently studying Psychology at the University of Toledo. I plan to further my studies after graduating and study psychology at Stanford University.

What are you passionate about in your work/school?
I’d like to broaden my perspective of life in general so I always enjoy learning new things, especially when it comes to Psychology. I enjoy my classes so much because it gives me insight into how people think. I love meeting new people, and UT is a great place for that as it is a very diverse university.

Where is your career headed?
As for now I don’t have my mind set on a specific career, but it is sure to be something that includes lots of communication. I am natural at getting along with people so I think that it is best I pursue a career in a field that requires good communication skills.

How has your Concept Schools experience helped shape your success?
I think that Concept has given me lots of confidence and guidance. I probably wouldn’t have been able to accomplish half of the things I have now had I gone to another school. I love that my school was with me every step of the way through the whole college application process and helped me make the best college and career decisions for myself.

How are you a game changer? Or, how are you making a positive impact in your community?
I think that the small things matter, so things like holding a door for somebody, a friendly smile, or picking up a candy wrapper off the ground can make a big difference. I try to put these small gestures in my daily life so that others might start doing the same and create a closely knit community.

What is the most amazing or interesting thing that’s happened to you since graduating?
After graduating I realized that I am now an adult and have to get thing done on my own. It’s pretty scary but also very fun. I started college and got to meet lots of different people. I love the diversity of my campus. I have also joined a fitness organization on campus and I am very excited to be a part of it.

Your favorite Concept Schools memory?
The annual Concept Science Fairs! They are always so much fun and very interesting. I had my own project sophomore year and won 1st place for the environmental science category. Even when you don’t have a project of your own it is fun to check out all the different things people made.

How do you support and participate in the Concept Alumni?
I am constantly in touch with my friends, and plan to organize get-togethers throughout the year. I am also in contact with a lot of my junior friends, who are now seniors. I try to help them as much as I can with the college process, and share my personal experiences with them.
