Future Institute
The real test of a high school education is how it plays out afterward. CAN graduates are successful, hardworking, and are making contributions in diverse fields. Here are just a few of the many paths taken by Concept Alumni.

Alumni Spotlight
(Week of Feb 29, 2016)

Priscilla Daboni

Priscilla Daboni is an Alumna of Horizon Science Academy Columbus High School, Class of 2014. Currently, Priscilla is attending the University of Chicago.

Briefly, describe your career path.
I am an English major and biology minor, pre-med focus at the University of Chicago.

What are you passionate about in your work/school?
I am really passionate about community involvement. I love volunteering through student-run organizations on campus, and this past summer I interned for a nonprofit organization through which I was able to do some incredible community-based research alongside bright and intelligent high schoolers from the South Side.

Where is your career headed?
I plan to attend the University of Cincinnati for graduate school through which I will gain my doctorate as a pediatric surgeon.

How has your Concept Schools experience helped shape your success?
Going to a Concept School is definitely a major factor to me being where I am today. All my teachers and administrators were so supportive and encouraging. They put a lot of time and effort into my aspirations and goals, and they always made themselves available to me.

How are you a game changer?
As mentioned, I participated in an internship this summer. But other than that, I am also an active member of a student-run organization called Southside Scribblers. We go to local elementary schools and teach 3-5th graders reading and writing skills. I also work at the University of Chicago emergency hospital. I am a researcher for a new drug that helps people with severe heart failure and has been proven to also assist in prolonging their lives.

What is the most amazing or interesting thing that’s happened to you since graduating?
I think just living in such a different atmosphere from the one I've known all my life has been very interesting. Chicago is so full of life and potential and there are so many opportunities to pursue my interests but also discover myself. It has also been quite a learning experience living away from my parents and being completely independent, but I have truly enjoyed it. :)

Your favorite high school memory?
Hmm...this is a really hard question! I've had so many enjoyable memories at Horizon. But I think my most recent favorite memory would have to be my graduation. It was such an honor to be able to speak at the graduation and it was overwhelming how supportive people were. It was/is definitely my favorite memory at Concept Schools.

How do you support and participate in the Concept Alumni?
I really enjoy coming back to Horizon whenever I can and visiting my old teachers and administrators. I also like speaking to the students who are there now about my experiences and giving any advice I can.
