Alumni Spotlight
(Week of January 30, 2017)

Anthony Perry

Anthony Perry is an alumnus of Horizon Science Academy Columbus, graduating in their very first class in 2003. He recently moved back to Columbus in November 2016.  He currently works in the Concept Alumni Network Columbus office and at Horizon Science Academy Elementary where is 2 oldest sons are enrolled in the 4th and 5th grades.

Briefly describe your career path.
I joined the Ohio Army National Guard during my senior year at Horizon. It opened the door to many possibilities for me. In my 3 years with the National Guard, I attended Columbus State and DeVry University. In 2006, before finishing my degree, I chose to go active in the US Army and travel. While active in the army, supported 2 tours to Afghanistan. One as a logistics coordinator and the other as the leader of a riot control platoon. These titles may mean very little to most of the people reading this but the experiences and the knowledge gained from my time in these roles has proven to be invaluable.  I separated from the army in 2009 and spent the next 2 years finishing my degree in Business Administration. Afterward, I became the Area Marketing Manager and Lead tax Trainer for Liberty Tax Services. I successfully operated separate territories in the state of Maryland until just last month when I decided to move back to Columbus, OH, where I am working with our current Columbus Alumni Director, Valerie Anderson, to connect with and expand the reach our alumni network.

What are you passionate about in your work/school?
I'm most passionate about working with past and future alumni. Building a network that will best serve our future alumni as they step out into the world. Our alumni have great stories to tell. Stories that future generations can learn lots from. But without a platform from which to tell the story how will it be heard? Creating that platform is my passion.

Where is your career headed?
The end goal has always been franchise acquisition. I have been working with an amazing group of like- minded peers and mentors that have prepared me to take this step in the very near future.

How has your Concept Schools experience helped shape your success?
Horizon was a cultural melting pot that really opened my eyes to the world. Exposure to so many languages, cultures, and traditions equipped me with knowledge and understanding to navigate the adult world better than many of my peers. Horizon taught me the skills to be an active listener and an effective communicator despite language barriers.

How are you a game changer? Or, how are you making a positive impact in the world?
My ability to lead from the front has always been a "game-changer'. I have an uncanny energy reserve. One that not many people can keep pace with. But it takes more than just one person to accomplish most of what we set out to do in life. I've been in many situations where my individual ability alone was not enough. When you're part of a team and everyone else is physically and/or mentally exhausted, someone has to "rally the effort'. Whether it's pulling an all-nighter with a study group, or navigating the mountains of Afghanistan in the dead of winter someone has to take the first step. I pride myself on being that person.

Your favorite Concept Schools memory?
I remember my time in 12th-grade independent study so vividly. Debating the global impact of chosen issues with my class. I had never really been challenged by any class. Not the way I had been there. And to be honest I'm not sure that I have ever been challenged in that manner ever again. I still have the paper I wrote in that class. N.B.A. means "No Boys Allowed": Why the league should do away with early entry. I still remember falling asleep on my Hewlett-Packard Desktop the night before, trying to put the finishing touches on my paper.

What is your advice for current Concept Students?
