Harold Jones-Quartey was a guest of Honor at CAN CMSA Gala on June 2, 2016 at Hilton Garden Inn Evanston

Chicago Bears Safety #29 Harold Jones-Quartey, 2010 graduate of Horizon Science Academy Columbus came to sign footballs for the silent auction and to spread his message about how hard work and believing in your dreams against all odds pays off. Recalling how his parents enrolled him in HSA Columbus so he and how his coach, Mr. Thomas Edwards was instrumental in finding a football league where he could thrive, he spoke of the importance of perseverance: “It doesn't matter where you from . . . but it's up to you and hard work! With your family, you can make things happen.” Chicago Math and Science Academy - CMSA alumni and teachers had a blast taking pictures with Harold and talking and dancing the night away.

Select Alumni to Serve as College Liaisons this Fall

We have created a new leadership role for Concept alumni who wish to represent their high school at their current college. It’s called the Concept Alumni [your college name] Liaison. We are proud to already have our first liaison at Cleveland State University, Ms. Jasmine Elder, who will take on this role in full in fall 2016.
The alumni college liaison will serve as the point person for any college-related questions for fellow alumni becoming acclimated to college life. The liaison will help steer alumni in the right direction to access all the services their college has to offer and will host social events throughout the year. The role requires a one-year commitment, and a small stipend will be available.

HSA Columbus Alumna Takes University of Chicago by Storm

Priscilla Daboni is an alumna of HSA Columbus High School, Class of 2014. Priscilla was accepted to the University of Chicago with a full ride. And, she is a sophomore now studying biomedical sciences. On top of Priscilla's heavy schedule, she is often involved in extracurricular activities, organizing cultural events and giving campus tours to guests at her university. We had the opportunity to visit Priscilla and enjoy a quick tour of the campus as well.

Academically, Priscilla's self-discipline and motivation to go the extra mile, and her lively, mature personality that embraces everyone around her, set a great example for current Concept students and speaks volumes about her potential for future success inside and outside of the University of Chicago.

Lunch with Chicago Bear Harold Jones-Quartey

Recently, the Concept Alumni Association and two lucky students from Horizon Science Academy McKinley Park had the unique experience of having lunch with a current Chicago Bear, who happens to one of our very own alumni!

Harold Jones-Quartey, a graduate of HSA Columbus High School, recently signed a 3-year contract with the Chicago Bears. At the busy start of his first NFL season, Harold took the time to meet Mariah Flores (9th Grade), Christen Cabrera (10th Grade), and Concept Schools educators for lunch on September 18, 2015 in Chicago.

It was an exhilarating moment for the students and staff to be able to meet him and hear about his recent accomplishment and hopes for the season. Harold is a very passionate, hard-working young man who has strong work ethics and character. It was inspiring to hear his professional perspective on how set goals and achieve them.

A recurring theme throughout lunch was Harold’s advice to never give up on your dreams and that success is all about your mind set. He stressed the importance of keeping a positive attitude through adversity and giving people a chance to try to reach their dreams.

We got our footballs autographed and sealed the day with a group picture. We’ll all be watching Harold this season and thank him for providing inspiration for our current students and alumni.

Concept Alumni, Published Poet, Music Entrepreneur
James Revels III, HSA Dayton Alumnus, Class of 2011

James Revels III is a self-proclaimed “Creative Entrepreneur” who is putting his love of S.A.M.M. (Science, Art, Math and Music) to work. When he’s not busy working what he calls his “9 to 5 job,” he says you can find him “try[ing] to find ways to bring my creative projects to life.” He cites his high schools days at Horizon Science Academy Dayton as the time when his creativity sprang to life: “It all started during high school when a group of friends wanted to record some lyrics to a song so I decided to help out. I bought a $5 gaming mic and some free software and went over their houses to record. I eventually upgraded to a legitimate condenser mic and recorded several mix tapes rapping over random beats we found. Realizing we couldn't monetize copy-written instrumentals eventually lead me into learning music composition.”

But music wasn’t James’ only creative outlet during high school. He also wrote “loads of poetry” and credits a fellow alumnus with convincing him to compile his poetry into a book, which he titled Yesterday's Tomorrow (you can see a sampling of it and hear his music at jamesrevelsiii.bandcamp.com). These days, James still records music and enjoys teaching friends music theory or how to record. He also blogs in what free time he has left.

James’ book Yesterday’s Tomorrow is available at www.lulu.com/spotlight/jr3yt

Concept HSA Columbus Alumnus, Harold Jones-Quartey, class of 2011, is a Chicago Bear!

Concept Schools may have a laser-like focus on academics, but we provide plenty of extracurricular activities, including sports programs, that help develop the whole student. When we heard that National Blue Ribbon winning Horizon Science Academy Columbus High School alumnus Harold Jones-Quartey made the regular season roster of the Chicago Bears, we could not have been more proud.

Mr. Jones-Quartey, who is from Columbus, attended the University of Findlay in Findlay, Ohio and was a safety last fall for the UF Oilers. After a near-miss for making the Arizona Cardinals practice squad, Jones-Quartey learned last weekend that he would be joining the Chicago Bears’ regular-season roster.

The dedication and perseverance that this level of athletic success requires is something all current and former Concept students can look to for inspiration. As for HSA Columbus High School and Concept Schools, as UF coach Rob Keys told The Courier news, “It’s great for the (UF) program and is going to help in recruiting,” Keys said. “(Jones-Quartey) was a model citizen . . . You can’t ask for a better representative at the University of Findlay.” We feel the same way.

Saleem Khan makes it to the top-performing ensemble at UIC.

The Concept Alumni Network would like to congratulate yet another member of the Concept family on a great accomplishment.

Saleem Khan, alumnus of Chicago Math & Science Academy (CMSA), Class of 2015, was accepted into the top-performing ensemble at the University of Illinois at Chicago.

Last year CMSA student Ms. Damilola Oyedokun laid the foundation of college music auditions with her acceptance into UIC’s top ensemble as well.

We wish them both the very best in their academic endeavors, and thank you to CMSA and its wonderful Band program for preparing our students to take giant steps in their college careers.
